It was built into Blizzard's tools and workflow - they designed their game packages as resource files that were identical on each platform with only the launching application being different for the different OSes and hardware. This was at a time when mac ports came out years later if you were lucky. Up until recently they were staunch supporters of macOS - back in the day they were one of the few companies to so reliably release mac and PC versions of games AT THE SAME TIME that we didn't have to even THINK it wouldn't happen.
